Self Defense Techniques

Unfortunately, at some point in your life you may be forced to defend yourself. You as an individual may have to counter an attack from a complete stranger who intends to inflict bodily harm. To feel confident and to be prepared, you must learn some self defense techniques.

The First Step of any Defense Is Realization

Everyone must realize it can happen. People that meet with sudden violence take valuable seconds processing the information. There is disbelief and a total lack of comprehension. This always gives the attacker the advantage. The assault is over in a matter of seconds, for the most part. Training and practice allows instant action without thought. Everyone has the survival instinct. Learn to tap into it from the inner most part of your brain in a crisis.

The Best Survival Skill You Have is Avoidance.

There are self defense techniques as simple as walking in the other direction when things do not feel right. Stifle the urge to speak your mind to strangers. Being cut off in traffic or jostled on a busy street is something you need to get over.

The Attack Will Come Out of Nowhere Many Times

Hands and arms come around your neck; you are pushed into a wall. Use your feet and head at once. Stomp the instep of the attacker while butting your head back. Highly trained individuals would never attack you this way. Inexperience means they have their face close where a head brought back hard, will break their cheekbone or nose. Put some force behind the slam and the attack is over. Trained individuals always stay at arm’s length. Your attacker for the most part, will have no training. Learning some self defense techniques will counter the shock and speed the assailant is relying on to subdue you.

Learn to Recognize an Attempted Frontal Assault

Anyone walking toward you with bad intentions will telegraph the moves they plan to make. They will double check to ensure no one else is around, and then they will lean in and lunge. Watch for their shoulders to drop, and they will slightly crouch before they pivot into you. They will pretend to be walking by. Wait for them to turn towards you and lash out with your leg. Step into the kick. You must get in close and deliver a hit to the groin with your shinbone. You may very well break a toe or ankle otherwise. Drop your leg and slam both hands palm forward into their chest. The self defense techniques will work if you are mentally prepared.

Never Attempt To Go Toe to Toe with Anyone

There is no such thing as unfair fighting when it comes to survival. Level the playing field with quick thinking. Run if you can, scream, holler and grab anything that can be used as a weapon. Recognize the fact you may be on their playing field. Never walk around corners, walk out and around, the same goes for alleyways. Take the element of surprise away from the attacker by reacting quickly.

The only way to avoid being shot is to run and to become less of a target. Knives can be countered by using your jacket, belt or anything to block a thrust. Snap any article of clothing or purse at the assailant, and run at the first chance. Professionals, when they train individuals, focus a considerable amount of training on a person’s attitude.

Never Look or Act like a Victim

Being assertive can play into your favor, in some cases. Yelling back at the person may confuse them. They expect to see fear, and expect you will be frozen in terror. The few seconds of confusion is all you need to escape. Plan your routes, know the freeway exits and always have a full tank of gas in a strange area. Ensure your cell phone is always charged. Thinking ahead will prevent an attack. Fear is natural, but do not let it rule your actions. Allow instinct and common sense to become one of your self defense techniques.
