Self Defense Products

What You Need to Know to Buy Self Defense Products

It is very difficult these days to find real, honest information about self defense products. Everybody has a different opinion about what one must do in order to defend him or herself, and many of these people have no real expertise in the area. While the ultimate decision for a product is up to the purchaser, this article discusses the most relevant self defense products and exactly what you need to know in order to make a wise purchase.

One type of self defense product that has been growing in popularity recently is pepper spray. Pepper spray is a highly corrosive spray, mist, or sometimes foam that a person can use to spray the face of an attacker. The spray will immediately disable the assailant, as his or her eyes will begin to swell, his face will blister, and it will cause a huge amount of pain. Typically these effects will last for five to fifteen minutes– plenty of time for someone to make a getaway. This can also be done from a distance, stopping a conflict before it starts. Pepper spray can be dangerous to use, as in severe cases it can cause permanent damage or even death, but is accepted as a good self defense product. Pepper spray will typically cost about $10 for the smallest container, with an additional $1.50 per medicated wipe used in case of an accident with the spray.

Another self defense product that is growing in popularity recently is the police baton. These items have the benefit of being retractable and can easily be hidden, so they can be kept on oneself covertly or overtly if one so chooses. However, batons do require training and may not be the best choice for a person who is not able to participate in actual physical conflict. They are best used as a deterrent. If one is going into a dangerous part of a city or another situation where a confrontation could arise, even the display of something that is obviously a weapon could prevent an attack. A sturdy retractable police baton will cost $10 to $15.

Another option that many consider is the stun gun. Stun guns are good because they will immediately disable almost any attacker, regardless of size or strength, and also regardless of where the attacker is hit. It will typically disable a person for upwards of thirty minutes. However, these self defense products have a number of problems that many people do not know about. First, in many states they are outright illegal, and they require licenses in most other states. Also, a stun gun requires physical contact for the subject to be stunned, meaning that the owner will have to get very close to his or her attacker before using the weapon, which is the exact opposite of what he or she should be doing. Also, stun guns can and do sometimes kill people, landing the user in a heap of trouble. Therefore, they should only be used as a last resort. A stun gun will typically cost $40 to $50, but on some varieties batteries can add a large chunk to the cost.

Finally, many people want to carry handguns. The problems with this are obvious. Handguns will require some form of license in every state, cost a large amount, and have various fees and background checks associated with their purchase. Furthermore, they are not something that can be conveniently carried around as most states require special permits for carrying concealed. They also are lethal, meaning that some people would be reluctant to use one even if the situation arose. A handgun is recommended as a self defense product for the home, rather than one that the owner always carries with him or her.

Clearly choosing a self defense product is a big decision. The above are only four of the most common products, and also only give a small amount of information on each one. If you are trying to find the best product for yourself, you should definitely do a lot of research and take into account your capabilities and the type of situation you will be in before making a purchase. And keep in mind that it is best to use the least damaging weapon possible that will still adequately defend you. In any situation using excessive force can be dangerous, both legally and physically.

Spying Devices

Spying devices are miniaturized or hidden version of recording hardware that allow you to monitor or record what is going on in an area without the knowledge of those nearby. These devices are illegal to use in many cases, especially in a public area or for monitoring a conversation with somebody without their knowledge. However, they have many legal uses beyond the obvious and are definitely worth considering as a solution to many problems.

The most obvious use for spying devices is for protecting one’s home. Placing several spying devices around the house is more effective at catching criminals than typical cameras, as they are less likely to be noticed than a visible camera. Spying devices can also be used to keep track of your children while you are away or to watch for shoplifters in one’s place of business or even to record lectures in a school. Today using spying devices has become almost an art form as people record the actions of passers-by with their phones and places the videos on popular sites such as YouTube.

There are two types of these devices that you can buy: audio and video. Audio devices, as the name implies, are spying devices that can keep track of the sound in an area. These devices can range from tiny devices that can hold a few minutes of sound to slightly larger ones that are highly efficient and can broadcast sound to stations far away. There are even devices that point a laser at a window to detect vibrations and translate this into sound. Obviously the latter are very expensive devices that might as well have come right out of a James Bond film, but either way the more you are willing to pay, the fancier and more effective your audio spying device will be.

Video spying devices are much the same. You get what you pay for. There are some video spying devices that are small and can only take a few minutes of footage, or may do so in only black and white. There are other that can see for hundreds of yards, can stream footage over the internet, can detect motion and only turn on when they are needed, or can see in the dark. Full-property coverage will also cost more as more cameras will be needed.

The cost of these devices varies widely. For audio devices, a simple small recorder will start at $5, while the most advanced device that can capture all of the conversation in a large room will cost up to several hundred dollars. For video devices, simple ones will start at $20 and motion-detecting night-vision recorders with their own server will cost several thousand dollars. And then, there is the next tier of “James Bond” devices that can do even more– at a much higher cost.

As you have probably figured out, spying devices are extremely versatile and can do just about anything if you are willing to pay for it. These devices can help you do anything from protecting your home, to capturing lectures at school, to making sure that your employees at work stay on task. Whatever your need, if it involves surveillance, you can be sure that there is some type of spying device that can solve it for you.

Covert Surveillance Cameras

Cameras have been used as a means of remote viewing since the 1950′s. The space program used closed circuit television to maintain visual contact with rocket launchers. Today the technology is utilized by law enforcement, government agencies and private citizens. The use of covert surveillance cameras has become more prevalent with businesses and private citizens because, of their reduced costs and the need.

Society as a whole has become accustomed to cameras in convenience stores, parking lots and large retail stores. The units are obvious and many times simply act as a deterrent. Individuals knowing they are being monitored will of course, act differently. Today’s new technology allows wireless monitoring and the covert placement of cameras in virtually any common object.

The so-called nanny cams are popular with busy families today. Parents and guardians need assurances their children are safe with the baby sitter. Using covert surveillance cameras is simply another means of protecting children. The devices can be installed in smoke alarms, wall clocks and even stuffed animals. The wireless signal can be monitored in real time from any computer and certain cellular phones. The images can also be recorded for later viewing.

Generally, banks and businesses have security cameras that are prominently displayed. These highly visible cameras essentially keep people honest. Subsequently, employees and others have found ways around the fixed systems. They find dead spots and know when the units are off line. Therefore, to reduce loss, security specialists will use hidden surveillance equipment to capture people when they are unaware.

Ideally, the hidden devices will be located in something an employee will not inadvertently move, such as a planter or tabletop clock. Mounted operational wall clocks are an excellent location for cameras in an office or bank. There are systems that operate using night vision technology, as well. These are ideal for capturing images of individuals that come back after working hours.

Cameras can be placed in vehicles, as well, for a variety of reasons. Employers may need to determine if alcohol is being used or unauthorized riders are present. The fear of litigation has forced many employers to make use of spy equipment to protect against liability lawsuits. The covert surveillance cameras can be smaller than a quarter.

Placement is important, and having access to the area is critical for anyone placing a device. You need to consider the angle and type of lighting. Furthermore, the subject of the surveillance may be a different height and size than you, so place accordingly. Many people do not account for these variances, thus, the identity cannot be verified. Images that are used for law enforcement or litigation must show proof of someone’s identity.

Ensure the location is not where something can be moved to block the view. Placing cameras in air vents is too obvious and they can become dislodged easily. The ideal location is one where there is no need for servicing. Smoke alarms draw attention if they appear overnight, and in the event of a fire the inoperative ones will be disclosed.

Generally, people who are guilty of something will always assume someone is watching. Decoys can be placed around the home to allow individuals to believe they have identified the camera locations. Subsequently, when they think they are out of view, will let their true intentions be known. Misdirection is important in placement. For a true assessment of an individual’s intent they must be monitored when they are convinced, they are alone. Otherwise, they are acting to the camera.

Digital video recorders can also be used with most systems, however; this presents another problem, where to hide the recorder. In an office, the recorder can be in a locked file cabinet or a closet with limited access. In the home, the attic or a locked office can be used. Therefore, conducting surveillance on a location you do not have access too may pose some logistical problems. You will have to check the equipment and change out the recording medium. The angle and quality may also have to be adjusted after a few hours of operation. Working in pairs makes the job easier although, complete secrecy may be a necessity, in some cases.

Cameras can be attached to long flexible tubing that can look under doors and around corners. These types of units are ideal for short-term exploratory operations. The system if left in place may be discovered. They can run through heating and cooling ductwork. The monitoring station can be set up in the maintenance room. Many experts will run one along a chandelier chain. The access is gained through the lights electrical box in the ceiling. To properly place, covert surveillance cameras, an individual must have access even if it is limited.

Self Defense Tips

Humans have an instinct to survive, and many believe it is coded into the DNA of humans. Individuals need to realize the unthinkable can happen. You may encounter someone who attempts to assault you. You can however, prepare your mind and body for this possibility, and one way is to pick up some self defense tips.

First, there is a test involved. Look at your watch for less than a heartbeat. Now write down the time. Many of you may have failed to notice the time, yet you looked at your watch. Situational awareness is extremely important.

A well thought out defense includes awareness of your surroundings. For example, locate the exits, and scan for objects nearby, that can be used as a weapon. You must decide if you want to carry a personal weapon. There are any number and types available. Many self defense tips include personal firearms, pepper spray and stun guns.

Parking lots are dangerous, particularly at night. Many retail stores close off certain exits at dark. You should make note of which ones are closed off and when. Parking close to an entrance that may be closed when you leave, forcing you to use another one, will put you farther away from your vehicle.

Criminals profile their victims. They pick out ones who are obviously distracted and have a meek demeanor. Have your keys in your hands when walking. Fumbling in your purse or pocket for them is very distracting. Scan the area, and only unlock the driver’s door. Otherwise, someone can slip in the passenger’s door as you are getting in the driver’s side.

There are many self defense tips that include using common items as weapons. Your grocery bag may contain heavy cans that can be used to strike an attacker. They along with frozen meat packages will deliver a bruising blow to anyone. Hard objects work best against bone, like a cheekbone or head. Sharp objects are effective against soft tissue, such as the stomach. Car keys placed between your fingers make an excellent stabbing tool. Keep in mind the car alarm on the key fob, as well. The shopping cart will keep anyone at arm’s length, and it can be used as a battering ram.

Remember situational awareness when arriving home. Intruders can duck under the garage door as you pull your vehicle inside. Someone can also slip in as you hit the down button while stepping into the house.

Pull inside the garage and step out of the vehicle. Scan behind the car, and then trigger the garage door with the car remote. Your garage is full of handy tools that can disable someone who managed to get inside. Cans of spray paint, insecticides and garden tools are all useful. Spray the face and strike hard with a trowel or a shovel. Run away from the home if you can, and never allow yourself to be trapped inside with anyone.

There are some self defense tips for when you are in an underground parking garage. The first instinct when someone grabs you from behind should be to slam your head back. This maneuver will disable them quickly. Do not linger for answers because, you must escape at this point. Knowing where the exits are is important in underground garages. When walking to your car, walk wide around vehicles. Someone crouching beside one will lose the element of surprise this way. Avoid trying to squeeze between cars as a shortcut.

Some may feel confident enough to grab you from the front. Some self defense tips include stabbing your keys into their face, or slamming your palm forward into their nose. Grip their ears and attempt to pull them off. Stabbing a key into a person’s ear will stop them immediately. Your main goal is to keep them from getting a firm hold on you. Fast thinking will prevent this. Most people who attempt to assault someone do not expect a fight.

Always evaluate your situation. Know what is in your purse or pockets that can be used. You should scan the area for weapons, such as pieces of lumber, bricks or pipes. Know your options before anything happens. This must become a habit no matter where you are. Keep a pair of shoes in your vehicle that are suited for running. You may have to abandon your vehicle in some circumstances.

It cannot be stressed enough that paying attention to your surroundings may save your life. The best self defense tips include avoiding a situation by being aware. Practice, and always go over your escape plans regardless of the situation. Before long, this will become natural.
